When do I call 911 verses the fire department’s business line (652-4201)?

911 is for all emergencies. If your smoke or carbon monoxide detector is going off, you have an emergency. Vacate the building and call 911 preferably from a cell phone outside. It is our job to make sure you are safe and we can only do that if we are notified. The earlier the notification, the chances are better for good outcomes.

Milton has had false alarms but we prefer to be called for a false alarm than not called in an emergency. Milton has had significant carbon monoxide problems and even one death due to carbon monoxide poisoning. If your alarm is going off, call 911. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless. You will not know how much carbon monoxide is in your home if we are not called. Often times, people think they do not want to bother the fire department or they think they can handle it themselves. Please call 911, the fire department has gas meters and equipment to identify dangerous situations.

Milton Fire-Rescue’s business telephone line is for business. If you have a question about an inspection, would like to know the hours available for burn permits, or would like to schedule a tour of the station, feel free to use the business line. 603-652-4201. Milton’s Central Fire Station, located at 460 White Mountain Highway is manned, seven days per week, from 6 AM to 6 PM. That being said, if there is an emergency or other department business such as an inspection etc, there may not be someone in the station. Please feel free to call and leave a message. Someone should return your call shortly thereafter.
